The Grapevine Chain Gang is a friendly, supportive but still competitive group. Come out, join us, and hang out after the ride so we can get to know you. During Daylight Savings, we ... morehave ‘scheduled’ rides on Tue, Wed & Thu evenings. Details are below.

ALL RIDES ARE AT YOUR OWN RISK! SAFETY APPLIES TO ALL RIDES:
- Helmets are required & blinking rear lights are encouraged.
- Do not wear earbuds/headphones.
- TT/Tri-bikes are not allowed in the peloton
- We ride double pace line. Do not half-wheel or pass on the right without clearly announcing your intentions. If you don’t know what these terms mean, ask someone.
- When you are on the front of the group, focus on your pace. Do not coast downhill so everyone behind you has to ride their brakes (someone will yell “Pedal!”) or pull so hard uphill that the group blows up (someone will yell “Gap!”). If you find yourself at the front and don’t want to be, pull through and quickly rotate off. In large groups, do not sprint off the front after turns and stops. Going fast is good but accelerate slowly so everyone goes with you and doesn’t have to chase.
- It’s very important that you pay attention to what you’re doing to the group. Look back to see what’s going on. If you’re new, sit on the back and watch for a while. Although we like to ride fast, we work together as a group. We’re not racing each other.
- We can help you learn the ropes and enjoy welcoming new riders but we will ask dangerous riders, people who can’t figure the above out, to stay away. Lastly, we ride in the heat but cancel for rain or wet roads. Cancellations posted here.

Tue & Thu Ride
There are four groups, A, B, C & D.

The ‘A’ Group rides 31 miles at a 21-23 mph pace using race tactics.

The ‘B’ Group rides 31 miles at a 20-21 mph pace working together by rotating and taking short pulls.

The ‘C’ Group rides 30 miles at an 18.5–19.5 pace and again works together with stronger riders taking longer pulls.

The ‘D’ Group rides 27 miles at a 16 -17 mph pace with a focus on Group Riding etiquette. Usually stronger riders will pull to control the pace of the group.

Wed is our social ride. Pace will be about 17 mph If you can hold a 15.5-16 mph pace riding by yourself, you should be fine with this group. If you must ride faster than this, please skip this ride instead of blowing it up.

Road bikes, hybrids, and mountain bikes all work on this ride as the pace is generally a recovery from Tuesday and a warm-up for Saturday.

Group "C" is our "no-drop" group and rides at a ... morebeginner friendly 16-20 mph. The route is ~22 miles and will finish after dark. Bring lights and proper cycling attire. Rides require, at minimum, an appropriate bike in good working order, water, and a helmet. We suggest a spare tube, energy food, maybe a little cash in case we stop, and your biggest smile! Many rides are held subject to weather. It's a good idea to confirm dates, time and any specific requirements, too. We'll see you out there — and have fun!

Social Cycling Austin rides AS traffic and NOT AGAINST it. We stop at red lights, yield the right of way and let cars pass as best we can. We don't block intersections. We are nice to both our fellow riders and the other traffic on the road. LISTEN TO the volunteers helping to lead the ride. They are some nice folks and have you best interest in mind. If you have any questions about the rules, I suggest you check here:http://bicycleaustin.info/laws/austin.html

REMINDER: The goal has always been to create a safe environment for all riders, but we cannot control, nor do we desire to, every rider's behavior. We promote personal responsibility, and it is each rider's responsibility to take care of themselves, and if they choose to ride with us, then they accept those risks inherent in riding a bicycle with a large group of other people riding bicycles.
